從2005年起年年入選全明星賽的詹姆斯說：「我看不出來這是壞點子，我們需要做些什麼，就競賽觀點來看，全明星賽近幾年變得很糟糕，要試圖去扭轉。」他以灌籃大賽多次改變方式當例子，總是有改變才有新意，當問題出現時，再繼續找新的解決方式。
新賽季的全明星賽將於明年2月在洛杉磯舉行，詹姆斯說：「很難說這會是好或壞，我們還沒去實行，2月還沒到，所以沒人知道結果會是如何，但我喜歡這樣的改變，有何不可？」
去年明星賽後，NBA主席席佛（Adam Silver）和球員工會主席保羅（Chris Paul）開始討論，如何讓例行性的明星賽擦出新火花，腦力激盪出的結果包括加入公益和「選秀」元素，同時仍保持球迷的參與度。
根據新規則，東、西區共10名先發仍由票選產出，包括5成的球迷票選、2成5的球員票選以及2成5的媒體票選，分區票數最高的球員將是明星賽兩支球隊的隊長，若以去年來說，詹姆斯和杜蘭特（Kevin Durant）就是兩隊隊長。
隊長可依序指名先發的隊友、不受分區限制，票選外的各7名明星賽球員將由教練選出，共14名成員同樣由隊長輪流挑走，兩隊也將各自選擇洛杉磯慈善團體或是全國組織作為贊助對象。
這項改變先前已獲得勇士隊當家球星柯瑞（Stephen Curry）支持，現在東區指標球星詹姆斯也給予正面回應。
